Lipman Tennis Courts

Printer-friendly versionPrinter-friendly version

For those of you who are itching to practice those moves you saw during the U.S. Open, your wait will soon be over.  When that time comes, you'll be delighted to see that the back fence has been restored to its original full-size court location, allowing plenty of room now behind the baseline on that side of the net.  The Lipman Courts themselves have been resurfaced, and are in the process of getting re-painted.  This was able to be done as part of the Lipman Slide Repair Project (shown in the background), which was paid for with funding from FEMA.  The courts are scheduled to be re-opened in early October.  Stay tuned for more updates...

Recap of Lagoon Clean-Up

Printer-friendly versionPrinter-friendly version

Every year, the Lagoon is kept beautiful by the many who volunteer their time during the City's annual Lagoon Clean-Up event.  It's always a fun time for the volunteers (there were over 90 this year!), who are not only working towards a common goal, but kept from feeling weary due to the graciousness of the Brisbane Lion's, who themselves were volunteering their time by grilling up burgers and hotdogs on-site for all present to enjoy.  Keep on scrolling to view pictures from last Saturday, courtesy of Steven Huang:

Volunteers arrived at 9:00am and began cleaning up debris found in the rocks shortly thereafter.

Taking a well-deserved break for barbeque.

Volunteers Tom Lambert and Michele Salmon pause briefly from filling their buckets to snap a pic.

Adding to the fun each year is a contest centered around who is able to find the most interesting object.  One that will rank near the top for all time is a CHP's ticket book.  Adding to the ticket book this year were: a boomerang, a 25 year old American Express card, a toilet, coconuts, and motorcycle fairing.  The below picture shows some of last Saturday's top findings:

Thank you to all the hands that helped make last Saturday's Lagoon Clean-Up result in not only the single-largest turnout of volunteers, but also one where approximately 400 pounds of debris was able to be removed from the Lagoon area!  You are all superstars!

Volunteer of the Year Award

At Monday's City Council meeting, first up on the agenda was a special presentation to recognize the City of Brisbane's 2011 Volunteer of the Year, Dan Carter.  Mayor Bologoff stated how this individual (Dan being the recipient of the 2011 VOY award was kept a surprise until the very end) has helped in many different programs over the years, as well as helps anyone that he can, from children to seniors.  Some of the programs Dan has helped with are: Concerts in the Park, youth basketball as a coach, and the Day in the Park Festival (you may recall seeing him waving a big green flag at the start line of last year's Brisbane Derby, as shown in the photo below):

Some more specific community programs you may know Dan to be heavily involved with are: Operation Santa Claus, which he oversees, making sure Santa has presents to deliver to some very deserving children; Rebuilding Together, where he was a captain for the Lions Club which completely renovated a home in Brisbane, allowing a local family to continue to live in town; and the Lion's Sierra Point Prowl "Fun Run" that he founded and which raises money for college scholarships for Brisbane students.  And, of course, Dan was instrumental in bringing back the Brisbane Derby car races back into the community after a long absence.  As gathered, Dan is a very dedicated Brisbane Lion and very much involved with all the good work they do in Brisbane.  And finally, above all else, Dan is a dedicated family man who teaches his family by example how important and rewarding it is to serve one's community and schools.  And now, it's time for some photos that illustrate this special occasion:

Thank you, Dan, for you energy, enthusiasm and great effort you continually demonstrate to each and every one of us in Brisbane!

Follow Dan's example and get involved with one of Brisbane's many local Community Clubs and Organizations.

Scheduled Water Shutdowns

Printer-friendly versionPrinter-friendly version

On Wednesday, Sept. 21st, a four-hour water shut-down will occur in order to make necessary improvements to the local water mains.  A similar water shutdown will occur on Friday, Sept. 23rd from 10:00am - noon.  The affected area comprises of a small portion of McLain Ave., San Bruno Ave., and Bayshore Blvd., as shown in the image above.  Notices have been hand-delivered to all of the addresses affected by the temporary water shut-down.  We apologize in advance for any inconvenience caused by the shutdown and appreciate your understanding of this matter as work is completed.

BES Restroom Facility

If you were picking up your son, daughter, or grandchild from Club Rec yesterday, or live in the vicinity of San Bruno Ave. and Santa Clara St., you got quite the Public Works show yesterday afternoon.  For those who weren't at the scene of the BES Restroom Facility "drop", we've brought the show to you.  But first, hats off to all the people who made yesterday's installation a success: Mike Glynn, Brisbane general contractor, Nick Bianco of Park and Restroom Structures, Inc., crane operators from Peninsula Crane and Rigging, Jim Skeels, who oversaw the project administration as Brisbane's Parks and Recreation Director, and Greg Morris, Brisbane Public Works Inspector along with City Engineer Randy Breault, who provided the project's construction management.  The restroom facility was paid for through State Parks money, and will replace the porta-potty that the City has rented for a number of years for public, school, and athletic team use.  And now, without further adieu...it's time to start the facility drop photo show!

Greg and Mike checking the site over one last time.

The crane arrives, causing heads of passer-by's to turn.

Including those of kids attending Club Rec, who were excited to have a front-row seat from the BES blacktop.

The crane getting stabilized with side outriggers, well-prepared for the load it's about to bear.

With the crane in position, Greg gave Nick a call indicating it was time for him to make his way up to BES from the Public Works Corp Yard.

Compared to the vehicles behind it, the facility definitely made for an OVERSIZED load.

Greg helps with traffic control as the trailer turns on Santa Clara and prepares to back into the driveway for the BES Field.

The crane has a spreader which helps to evenly distribute the weight of the facility.  The four corners are then secured.

It takes the strength of some strong men to help stabilize the facility as it begins its ascent.

Up, up...

...and away!

Being lowered ever so carefully into place with some curious spectators looking on.

With the building low enough, Mike jumped up and into it to ensure it was properly lowered over the utility hook-ups.

With just a couple more feet to go, everyone is helping to ensure it continues downwards on a straight path.

One more walk-around, making sure the building is flush with the orange line that's been tied to help with placement.

Success!  The restroom facility has landed.

A peek inside the men's side.  Mike will be hooking up the plumbing and PG&E will be making the electrical hook-up's early next week.

Afterwards there were handshakes all around for a job well-done, as demonstrated by Jim and Nick.

As guessed, and in pure Brisbane fashion, the new BES Restroom will be properly dedicated to the community on Saturday, Sept. 25th at 10:00am by way of a "toilet paper" cutting ceremony.  Come and see if you're curious, and enjoy the refreshments that will follow!
