SB Mtn. Watch Launches Digital History Project

San Bruno Mountain Watch recently launched the San Bruno Mountain Archives, a digital history collection that seeks to make the mountain’s abundant stories accessible to the public. The archives, available online at www.mountainwatch.org/archives, are steadily growing; currently over 600 items are organized into 30 different collections covering a period of 150 years.

“The archives are meant to spark moments of discovery and reflection, both deepening and complicating the sense of familiarity and curiosity people feel towards San Bruno Mountain,” said Ariel Cherbowsky Corkidi, Program Director for San Bruno Mountain Watch. “The collections reinforce that the mountain is not only a remarkable ecological landscape, but also a folkloric and profoundly dramatic place.”

The archives include historic photographs, slides, letters, leaflets and documents that until recently were sitting on shelves or stacked in boxes at the San Bruno Mountain Watch office. In addition, hundreds of newspaper articles about the mountain from the late 19th century onwards are being methodically clipped and added to the archives, sourced from digitized newspapers researched through the www.newspapers.com website. Artists and poets have also contributed their work.
