Parkside Project History

In 2005 the City hired Project for Public Spaces (PPS) to engage in a community placemaking exercise.  This exercise revealed community interest in how the Parkside area could be re-envisioned and redesigned to create active and dynamic community spaces. PPS compiled the results in a report, “Brisbane is Awesome! Defining the Core Places in Downtown Brisbane”, presented to the City Council.  During the great recession of 2008-2011, the long term future of Crocker Industrial Park and Brisbane Village Shopping Center was a topic of concern and discussion spearheaded by the City Council’s Economic Development Subcommittee. This culminated in the City’s partnering with the Urban Land Institute (ULI) to convene the Crocker Park Technical Assistance Panel (TAP) in 2014 to explore and evaluate potential long-term land use and economic development options for Crocker Park.  The TAP report can be found here.   Meanwhile, the concept of housing within the Parkside area dates back to the adopted 2011 Housing Element, which designated the vacant site next to the shopping center for mixed use, including residential.  The discussion regarding potential housing evolved into what was incorporated in the adopted 2015 Housing Element.

In September 2015, the City selected MIG Consultants to prepare the Parkside at Brisbane Village Precise Plan. MIG specializes in community engagement, urban planning and design, multimodal transportation planning, and communications. They will be teaming up with Strategic Economics and Hexagon Transportation Consultants to provide insight into economic opportunities and constraints, and analysis of any proposed street and property access improvements, respectively.
