Coyote Workshop at PHS

Last Friday, the Peninsula Humane Society (PHS) hosted a workshop titled, "Inside the Loves of Urban Coyotes". It was a packed house with residents from all over the Peninsula in attendance. The workshop featured a talk and photos taken by Janet Kessler, a naturalist who is in her 13th year of daily field research (ethology), observing and photo-documenting urban coyote behavior and coexistence. County Readies for Possible Weekend PSPS

A strong wind event coupled with high temperatures and low humidity has resulted in the National Weather Service calling for a Red Flag Warning in much of the Bay Area Saturday night through Monday morning.
The City of Brisbane is not currently expected to be impacted by a PG&E Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS), though surrounding areas as close as South San Francisco may be this weekend.

If PG&E expects service to an address to be impacted, they will attempt to call, text, or email by using the phone number or email address currently on file. Please sign in and update your contact information here.
To prepare for the PSPS, PG&E is asking customers to:
- Update your contact information online or call 1-866-743-6589 during normal business hours. PG&E will use this information to alert customers through automated calls, texts, and emails, when possible, prior to, and during, a PSPS.
- Plan for medical needs like medications that require refrigeration or devices that need power.
- Identify backup charging methods for phones and keep hard copies of emergency numbers.
- Build or restock your emergency kit with flashlights, fresh batteries, first aid supplies and cash.
- Consider family members who are elderly, younger children, and pets. Information and tips including a safety plan checklist are available at www.pge.com/wildfiresafety.

Recology Modernization Project
Printer-friendly versionRecology is proposing a comprehensive modernization program designed to facilitate management of San Francisco’s solid waste stream and achieve the 2020 “Zero-Waste” goals established by the San Francisco Commission on the Environment. The proposed program is substantially different from Recology’s previous proposal from 2015. The current proposal includes construction activities within both San Francisco and Brisbane, with much of the future development occurring in San Francisco. In Recology’s 2015 proposal, much of the new development was proposed in Brisbane. Components of the project now proposed within Brisbane include:
- Construction of a 2-story 67,000 sq. ft. fleet maintenance facility and a 2-story 13,600 sq. ft. welding shop
- Demolition of approximately 154,311 sq. ft. of small shop space and administrative offices to create a fleet storage area for approximately 265 vehicles.
While the City of Brisbane and City of San Francisco maintain land use control over development within their respective jurisdictions, state law requires that a single environmental document be prepared to disclose and evaluate the environmental impacts of the entire project, including components within San Francisco and Brisbane. Since most of the development occurs within San Francisco, San Francisco will serve as the lead agency in preparing the environmental document. The City of Brisbane is working with the City of San Francisco in the preparation of the environmental document to ensure that impacts occurring within Brisbane are adequately identified, evaluated, and mitigated as needed. As part of the City of San Francisco’s environmental review process, this public notice has been sent out describing the project and providing the public the opportunity to provide preliminary comments on the project’s proposed environmental impacts.

Brisbane Goes Platinum

Last night, the City of Brisbane was awarded with a Platinum-level Beacon Award by the Institute for Local Government (ILG) for its voluntary efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, save energy, and adopt policies that promote sustainability.
On-hand to receive the award for Brisbane were Councilmember Conway, Mayor Davis, and Councilmember Cunningham. They were joined by ILG Executive Director Erica Manuel and ILG Board Chair Michele Bagneris in the photo above.
The City of Brisbane received the Platinum-level Beacon Award for the following achievements:
- Agency GHG Reductions: Platinum Level - 32% reductions
- Community GHG Reductions: Platinum Level - 20% reductions
- Agency Energy Savings: Platinum Level - 21% savings
- Natural Gas Savings: Platinum Level - 24% savings
- Platinum Level Award in Sustainability Best Practices
Brisbane was the first city in California to receive a Gold-level Beacon award by ILG in 2015, adding Platinum Spotlight Awards over the years (in 2016 for Sustainability Best Practices and in 2018 for Agency Greenhouse Gas Reductions) before attaining this latest honor of a Platinum-level Beacon Award. Much of these achievements can be attributed to the hard work of the Open Space and Ecology Committee and their work on the City's Climate Action Plan. Learn more about ILG's Beacon Program here.
